VAT certificate in the UAE

The VAT certificate is the Federal Tax Authority document that confirms your VAT registration and your Tax Registration Number. For a copy, check your EmaraTax account and the FTA page.

A VAT certificate is the document that proves your business is registered for VAT in the UAE. It carries your Tax Registration Number (TRN). Clients, banks and suppliers often ask for it, so know where to find it.

The facts we hold do not describe the download steps, so we do not list menu names here. Check the FTA EmaraTax page for the current route, because portals change.

What the certificate is for

You use the certificate to show that you are a VAT registrant. Typical requests:

  • A new customer or supplier wants to confirm your TRN before they deal with you.
  • A bank asks for it when you open an account or apply for credit.
  • A government entity or a large company sets you up as a vendor.
  • A free zone or licensing authority asks for your tax registration proof.

The TRN on your invoices

Your TRN has to appear on every tax invoice you issue. The rule says a tax invoice shows the words "Tax Invoice", the supplier name, address and TRN, the recipient name, address and TRN if the recipient is a registrant, a sequential invoice number, the issue date, a description, the amounts in AED and the tax amount. A simplified tax invoice needs fewer items but still shows the supplier TRN.

Not issuing a tax invoice is fined AED 2,500 per case. See VAT penalties.

How do I verify a TRN or tax ID in the UAE?

The FTA has a public TRN/TIN verification tool at tax.gov.ae/en/trn.verification.aspx. Type the TRN into the TRN field, enter the captcha and submit. The page does not ask you to log in. Use it to check a supplier before you claim input VAT on its invoice, or to confirm the number a client gives you.

People also search for a UAE "tax ID". For VAT and corporate tax the number that counts is the TRN the FTA issues when you register; your own appears on your certificate and in your EmaraTax account.

Where to get a copy

Start with your EmaraTax account, which is the Federal Tax Authority portal where your registration is held. The person who holds the login can look for the certificate there. If you are not sure who set up the account, ask the person who registered the business. If an accounting firm registered you, ask it.

If you cannot find it, check the FTA EmaraTax page for the current steps. We do not guess a download path.

If you lost it

  1. Try to log in to EmaraTax with your registered details.
  2. If you can log in, look for your registration details and the certificate.
  3. If you cannot log in, ask your accountant or authorised agent to help, or check the FTA page on recovering access.
  4. Keep a copy with your tax records. Records are kept for five years after the tax period in general.

Details that must stay current

If your business details change, update your tax record. Not updating information is fined AED 1,000, or AED 5,000 if repeated within 24 months. A certificate that shows an old name or address will cause problems with banks and customers.

Not registered yet

You get the certificate only after registration. Read VAT registration for the thresholds (AED 375,000 mandatory, AED 187,500 voluntary) and the 30 day time limit. If you stopped trading, see VAT deregistration instead. The wider rules are on the VAT in the UAE page.

Common mistakes

Owners often mix up the TRN and the company licence number, or copy the TRN from an old invoice that had a typo. Read it from the certificate or your EmaraTax record each time you set up a customer or a template. Do not let a supplier invoice you without your TRN if you want to claim input tax later: a missing or wrong number on a tax invoice can cause trouble when you file.

Also keep the certificate with your registration date in mind. Your first return period starts from the registration, so the date matters for when your first VAT return is due.

Questions people ask

What does a UAE VAT certificate show?

It confirms that the business is registered for VAT with the Federal Tax Authority and shows the Tax Registration Number. Check the certificate itself for the other details printed on it, such as the legal name and registration date.

Do I need the certificate to issue a tax invoice?

You need your TRN, not the paper itself. A tax invoice must show the supplier name, address and TRN. The certificate is the document where you can read that number.

I lost my VAT certificate. What now?

Log in to your EmaraTax account and look for the certificate there, then check the FTA page for the current steps. If you cannot log in, ask your accountant or authorised agent for help.

How do I verify a UAE TRN?

Use the FTA's public TRN/TIN verification tool at tax.gov.ae/en/trn.verification.aspx. Enter the TRN, complete the captcha and submit. No login is mentioned on the page.

Is a VAT certificate the same as a corporate tax certificate?

No. They are separate registrations with separate numbers. VAT registration is under the VAT law, and corporate tax registration is under the corporate tax law. A business can have both.
